Day 53 - Sunday 8/9

Calm before the storm

It was an extra quiet day, with one of the main events being the arrival of the pool shark from the latest feedster toy vote.. Julia found out Steve was perhaps taking the crush thing seriously, and Johnny told him it had been a good-natured joke

Vanessa attempted to step up her social game a bit, but of course it was too little and far too late to do her any good.. she complimented Becky on her hair and eyebrows, she gave Austin some dating tips about Liz, and she helped Steve pick what to wear for tomorrow's veto meeting.. she first dressed him in her clothes (what?), then went through his own and found a nice outfit.. she also did his hair Stefon-style, and made a big to-do of presenting him to the others before telling him to put the clothes away before they get dirty.. Steve followed that up by telling us he knows she's trying to play him and campaign, and that it wasn't working

The other big event today was that Llarry Llama was vetoed out of the eviction chair and replaced by Voodoo Potato.. that was a cute interlude and illustrates what a slow day it was.. I could have taken the day off but they neglected to let me know ahead of time

I can't imagine Vanessa is going to just lie down and wait for the axe to fall.. most of them have been doing pretty well with shmoozing her into complacency, but we know too well by now that she's not the complacent type

Update: Vanessa did sit down with Steve to grill him about Johnny and what he's heard.. Steve said he missed all the Thursday fights and asked for a retell, which she gave.. he also said he'd heard about the "alliance of eight" and Vanessa was quick to point out that was only a deal that was for last week only, if it was a double eviction - she might change her tune about that Monday.. afterwards Vanessa counted votes with Julia for a Shelli vs Johnny scenario - she truly seems to have no hint of what's about to hit her

James made tinfoil hats for Tinfoil Voodoo and Llarry Llama, and returned Llarry to the eviction chair because they hadn't had their veto meeting yet either.. finally, Austin and Liz shared a kiss or three undercovers on the hammock.. I don't think it qualified as a makeout for the tally, but they might get there

Day 52 - Saturday 8/8

The plot thickens

Steve and Shelli compared notes before the player draw and discovered that Vanessa had indeed asked each of them to pick her if they get Houseguest Choice, and she'd told each of them she'd use the veto on them should she play and win, confirming the intel Johnny delivered to each of them last night.. however they both agreed Becky would be unlikely to put up Johnny as renom and would probably opt for Austin or Liz instead, regardless of the deal made between the eight

It turned out Shelli did get the HG Choice chip and she selected Vanessa to play.. Vanessa asked Shelli to throw it to her, and she swore on her mother that she'd use it on Shelli if she won.. Meg and Austin were also picked to play along with Becky, Steve, and Shelli, with Johnny hosting.. most of them were expecting the object counting stay/fold comp

But they were wrong: it was the comics comp, where they got quick peeks at custom comics of themselves from an obstacle course involving a zipline and ladder, and had to memorize and match them up in double sets with minor discrepancies between them.. Steve won, taking only 13 minutes.. it was an individually timed comp, with 35 minutes max allotted for each.. feeds were down five hours, and #WhenPOVStarted hashtag game trended on Twitter USA

They said it was a huge and elaborate set, and they all loved the characterizations.. Audrey's comic had her blanket and sunglasses, Shelli's was a puma, Austin's had a sword, Becky's had a train, Steve's was a sound engineer, Da'Vonne was Supermom, Vanessa the Mad Hatter, Liz was the evil twin "she'll steal your heart and your wallet," and Jason was in his grocery store with a sausage (really?).. James and Becky had a celebratory high five afterwards, saying it couldn't have gone better.. Becky's planning to put up Vanessa and they expect she'll be sent to jury - I expect we'll have a wild ride until then

No direct communication

Somehow it came out that Liz wasn't crazy about Austin's tattoos and especially his beardytail, and what followed was a silly but grand comedy

Obviously he wasn't thrilled to hear that, and it was agreed that the two of them would spend one hour apart, without speaking, followed by a hammock date.. Shelli ran messages between them about the date prep, and James joined in on that.. it was all very loud, very juvenile, and very funny - Flashback 8/8 10.15pm

Austin got cleaned up and dressed for the date - Liz didn't, but Julia threw a towel over her bikini.. he presented a dish of candy to Liz - she complained that he'd put M&Ms in her walnuts, and off they went.. Steve did a good job as waiter, but they weren't impressed.. it was just a little more awkward than usual, with the beardytail remaining a sticking point.. they had another "little pop kiss," Austin agreed to trim the beard (not the tail) on Thursday, and Liz agreed to make out with him if he wins HOH - that last bit is per his retell to the Have-nots

Meanwhile, Vanessa resurfaced and went to work on James, dwelling on the agreement between the eight of them to boot the other three first, and saying the HOH's power is effectively over after veto meeting - yep, she really said that! James nodded in most of the right places and said most of the right things, and then Vanessa headed up to HOH

Becky handled her like the Black Friday boss she is, pretty much going along with whatever Vanessa said and not giving up anything.. Becky reminded Vanessa how she gets paranoid every week and every week Becky has to talk her down, and by the end of it Vanessa seemed mostly convinced she won't be the renom (she will be).. retells from all of them about all of the above ensued all over town, like they do

One last tidbit from the evening, James asked Julia if she had to hook up with one of the four guys left, who would it be.. it was all a good-natured joke, and Julia said Steve.. later Johnny told that to Steve (who has a little crush on Julia) but he didn't mention it was said jokingly.. Johnny also told him that he'd told Becky how he'd let Steve in on the whole veto pick/renom plan, so Steve doesn't have to play dumb about that for Becky's benefit anymore

LINES OF THE DAY

Sunday
Vanessa Diary about Becky: I don't see her as a game player, she's more flavor of the week

Steve to us: Vanessa, I know you're trying to play me, I know you're nervous and you're campaigning, but it's not working

Vanessa: You didn't tell Johnny Mac, did you?
Steve: Tell him what?
Vanessa: That I think he's going home
Steve: No

Steve: Becky's game is gonna blow up in her face
Vanessa: If she puts me up as replacement nominee, it's gonna go up really really soon
Vanessa: She had the audacity to tell me she's not doing any more deals
....
Vanessa: I'm not very social as you can see
Steve: YOU THINK I AM?!

Saturday
Becky to Meg, James, Jackie: If Vanessa wins, we're fucked - I'm really fucked

Steve: If I go, it's not the end of the world.. I don't think anyone came into this house expecting to win it, except Audrey - I've been on borrowed time since Day 15

Vanessa: are we still good for the plan?
Meg: I don't know
Vanessa: I'm a little worried she wouldn't put Johnny Mac up

Vanessa: And you're not Clay's cousin, lover or brother?
Johnny: You're gonna be disappointed when you see the show

Becky about Vanessa pointing and demanding everyone's word: I wanted to break her motherfuckin finger!

Austin: It can't be me committing 90% for her 10%, otherwise I'm a fool

Johnny: You can't underestimate the pre-date

Vanessa to James: We all gave our words, I don't know what kind of discussion needs to be had

Steve to Johnny, about Julia: I know I have to resist it but deep down I don't really want to, but I know I have to

Ratings - Tinfoil Hats edition

Ratings are based on entertainment value

It's the time of the season when they start catching up the edits to accurate storylines, more or less, and that never hurts. Their commercial teasers and Twitter feed are still a bit behind the times, but oh well. The fact that they've all but omitted the Steve/Vanessa partnership is interesting, and I hope they'll throw a couple flashbacks into Wednesday's show so they can take full advantage of how conflicted he's been this week. That's the kind of meaty stuff they and viewers love, and it'd be a shame if they end up overlooking or over-simplying that.

Won: Outback dinner (guest)
He still doesn't bother me nearly as much as he does some and let's face it, he's doing pretty well in there. He talked himself out of a certain nomination and possible eviction, and now nobody sees him as a threat since they believe he's not there to win. He's also in a solid trio which is a pretty good spot to be at this point.

Won: $10,000; Never Not pass; Outback dinner (guest)
HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD
People laughed, people yawned, and people screamed, but when it came down to 'brass tacks' Becky came through. Her plan was risky and will likely come back to bite her, but when she proclaimed 'I've worked Black Friday, I can handle Vanessa' she meant it. #BlackFridayBoss has kicked ass this week, and tomorrow's veto meeting fallout should give us a good show.

Won: 1 week 6 days knight; 24 hours Vanessa polish
Like Becky, she talks big but she hasn't really been in a position to act on her big words yet. I hope she does get some power as it'll be interesting to see if she lives up to her talk, and of course it'll be fun for us if she does.

Won: Outback dinner
His pranks and tinfoil creations are a nice side game, and his BB game isn't too shabby either. I liked him back in the beginning, and when he became Jeff's icky sidekick I said I thought he'd be okay again if/when Jeff got gone. Nailed it.

Won: 1 week Wackstreet
He's the 'superfan' who's kept that on the DL, and it's been working for him. He's laid low except when he's needed to step it up, and he did that without fanfare drawing too much attention. Now that we're past midway point, he's been revving up with insightful gametalks to the right people at the right time. Daytimers who don't keep up have probably missed most of those, but that's why there's Flashback.

Won: ½ week Wackstreet
I think she's hilarious much of the time, especially when she gets going with Liz. They've shown that a season of all twins or close siblings could be a good twist indeed, with bonus entertainment because they aren't required to do the fake small talk or playing nice with each other. It makes it all a bit more Real, if you will, when not much about reality TV is.

Won: ½ week Wackstreet, Outback dinner
See Julia, with the addition of her weird whatever-it-is with Austin. I like how the whole thing is out of whack. It's definitely not a showmance, but it's more than a one-sided obsession too. Again, their whole thing doesn't fit the mold and that's fine with me - I'm not a fan of predictable or ordinary.

Won: Gronk party cruise
She's cute, fun and funny, and she leans like nobody's business. That's about it, but that's enough to have gotten her this far.

Won: 2,400 battles
NOMINATED
I'm torn. As annoying as she can be, she garnered some unexpected respect with her endurance win and 2400 battles. Now that her bedmate's gone and their creepy squealy interaction with him, we'll see what she's like on her own. She didn't let on to Vanessa that she knew the plan and that was surprising, though I'm not totally convinced Vanessa didn't see through that. Post-veto meeting fallout could be epic, and Shelli's in position to take the brunt of it.

NOMINATED - HOLDS VETO
Ups all the way, not only for winning again when he had to but for keeping his cool with the pressure on him before and after the comp (not to mention during). He came to a very difficult crossroads this week and opted to drop his Danielle/Jason-esque secret partnership with Vanessa because he could see she was doomed, but that probably didn't make his decision any easier. I'm sure she'll forgive him and let him visit the mansion when it's all over.

Won: Outback dinner; 24 hours polishing Jackie
After five weeks of dominating the game and the feeds, she's been surprisingly quiet now that crunch time has arrived. I'm looking forward to some memorable blindside fallout after she's put up as renom. But even if she reins it and doesn't explode on Monday, I do not expect her to go quietly, especially being on the block next to Shelli.

Won: Ireland trip; Outback dinner (guest)
He started badly, calling himself a 'superfan' after being recruited at a basketball game and marathoning a few seasons. He said BB is about making new friends and memories, and he had a problem with lies and backstabs except when he was doing it. He spent most of his time stapled to Shelli and they got a lot of mother/son jokes, but I saw them more as creepy Lannisters, especially when she went on about how like her brother he is. He provided loads of unintentional comedy, weird mouth things and mumbling translations, he peed in HOH shower, and he got out just in time.

Won: 1 week Wackstreet
Another superfan who found out it's easier to play BB from home, he fell into Vanessa's disastrous Renom Roulette wheel and went out earlier than many hoped. He got mouthy about many of them and popped some good funnies, but he laid around most of the time until it was too late. He gave us some of the best reaction faces of all time, especially the night they played squicky truth or dare - he even had a dedicated cam for much of it. He mentioned this site often, usually saying it's 'hard to navigate' so he'll probably never see this.

Won: Nothing
She was erratic and unpredictable, and the random ways she kept them stirred up made for some of the best feeds in ages. And as a bonus, she featured in all the fights, many because the others didn't believe her telling truths. They did buy most of the fibs, and without 'empirical evidence,' but they fell for her wacky gameplay more than twice. She marooned herself in a bed and a dental chair, with some laughs in between, and she got the 2nd ever penalty vote. I enjoyed watching her, and will miss her.

Won: Nothing
I haven't given many empty wheels before their time, and I don't think any of those got them as early as he did. But we've never had such a misogynistic, inappropriate, and unfunny pig before. CBS let him get away clean and that's what it is - I'm just glad to see the back of him.

Won: Power to nullify 3 votes
She wasn't afraid to confront people nor to keep fighting to stay, which was good for us, but didn't help her much. She figured out the twins early but didn't leverage that to her advantage soon or well enough. Her 'game on' fight with Audrey and pantry rant to us were memorable, especially her catch-phrase 'get your life!' She was smart, funny, and volatile. She didn't let us take full advantage of #DaVonneHasADaughter, a hashtag that was too good to be true.

Won: Nothing
He was like a parody of all the former surf boys we've had, with all the worst qualities of asshat hamsters past rolled into one. He verbally beat up on Steve a few times but the primetime version earned him viewer loathing, even if his actoring was lousy. He ranted, streaked, flipped us off, and mostly talked about himself, but he promised to save us all someday through music.

They erroneously said last year that BB16 would have 'the most houseguests ever' but this year they really did, with 17 total after the twins split into separate entities. Now my symmetry for this section is out of whack and I don't know what to put here.

Big Brother 17 FAQ
June 18 was Day 1 move-in. June 24 was CBS premiere, Day 7. Finale will be September 23, Day 98

Feeds are streamed by CBS, and accessible via All Access subscription. Call 888-274-5343 for account help, including cancellation.

CBS shows are Sundays 8pm, Wednesdays 8pm, eviction Thursdays 9pm (Global in Canada).

Big Brother After Dark is on POP (formerly TVGN). It airs Monday, Tuesday 11pm-2am; Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday midnight-2am; Thursday 1am-3am. The aired blocks are recorded earlier on the same night.

The CBS app (by CBS Interactive) will play BB air shows and other CBS shows, but not feeds. Use your browser to watch feeds on mobile devices. The same All Access link used to subscribe will lead to the feeds viewing page if you're already signed up.

Liz and Julia had to survive five evictions in order to play separately as individuals, which they did, with Julia officially entering the game on Day 43. They switched places every few days. They had a limited time in Diary to change clothes, adjust their appearance, and exchange info. The non-playing twin was sequestered in a 'house,' possibly the jury house.

BB17 prizes are the same: $500k for the winner and $50k for 2nd place. Stipend for the others is $1,000 per week again, including pre-show hotel and jury sequester. Recruits or those with established pre-season fan bases might get more.

The habitat has 80 HD cameras (up four) and over 100 microphones.

The recorded in-house announcements are the voice of producer Don Wollman.
