Day 97 - Tuesday 9/22

The elephant

Amid cards, packing, and reminiscing, they got grooming supplies.. Liz and Vanessa touched up each other's roots, and Steve shaved off his beard

Liz broke up the mundane suddenly by saying she wanted to "tackle the elephant in the room" and invited Steve and Vanessa to pitch her their F2 spiels.. Vanessa launched into a long speech (that she'd previously told Liz to ignore) about Scamper Squad loyalty but that she'd been working with Steve "since Day 40" so she would be taking him if she wins.. again, she's promised Liz multiple times she'll take her, and she's been working with Steve since before feeds.. Steve didn't really give a pitch, and they all cried and hugged afterwards

They talked a bit about secrets, with Vanessa interrogating Steve again about his schools and Liz about her & Julia's modeling - she didn't let on her own secret, but she pretty much let them know she's got one.. she also said (without saying the exact words "on feeds") that she wants to propose to Mel, possibly even on the finale, but she didn't think there'd be time.. I won't be a bit surprised if that happens, from Mel's side, despite the fact that our 90 minutes are already crammed to the gills

They had a final game of Pot Ball, and played some more cards.. Wednesday morning they'll probably be gathered to say good-bye to feedsters, and that'll be it until after the show airs, when Jeff backyard interviews will stream on the feeds

I'll have a final post tomorrow with my Star of the Season and of course finale write-up at some point, plus the Final Three obits and prize tallies.. thanks to everyone for reading the site this season, for getting your feeds here, for donating, and for using my Amazon portal! Day 96 - Monday 9/21

Merry Christmas

They spent most of the day napping and playing cards, and the treats kept coming.. this time they got cake pops, with designs featuring rockin' roll OTEV, blanketed Audrey, OH MY LANTA, and Zingbot 3000 (overlooking the upgrade to 9000)

Vanessa told Liz that Steve thinks he and Vanessa will take each other to finals, but that she (Vanessa) will take Liz if she wins Part 3.. she also said she didn't think she'd get finals votes from Liz, Julia or Austin, but she made another veiled bribe reference, saying "people who have been good to me in this game are gonna have a fuckin merry Christmas"

Like many hamsters before him, Steve bade farewell to the backyard before they were locked in for the duration, saying to himself once again he can't believe he made it to the end.. their luggage arrived, making fact that this is the end that much more real to them.. evening brought caramel apple supplies from After Dark and a third totebag (one for each now!) as well as more cards, and more dancing around the gametalk that's either not being said aloud or is being fibbed about, and very little else besides waiting and nervousing about finale

A couple news items: the jury deliberation sit-down has probably already happened, without its ninth member but likely with an alumni coach again.. post-finale interviews with Jeff will be streamed live on the feeds Wednesday night

Day 95 - Sunday 9/20

Dog days, without the dog

No more feeds polls have shown up, no dog versus bunny option, and no Izzy to liven things up at the end like last year

After Liz and Steve took to gin so well, Vanessa taught them her specialty, Texas Hold'em - they liked gin better.. they did face masks and nose strips, and spray tanning is scheduled for later.. Vanessa and Steve had a finals scenarios convo, and he didn't let on even a little that he's planning to boot her if he wins Part 3.. however, Liz whispered to Vanessa at one point that she caught Steve coming in from outside late last night and that he seemed amped and upset, so those inevitable seeds of distrust began to blossom a little more

After Dark did another viewer poll, fondue or pizza, and fondue supplies were delivered to the delight of our trio.. they all loved it, even picky eater Steve, and they got PopTV mugs and another totebag.. Steve rehearsed his Vanessa eviction speech again, with no major changes - yet?

The annual season retrospective show had the usual expected highlights and lowlights, plus a nice return of subtitles for Clay's mumbling, another interestingly coincidental (or not) ad placement, and a delightful segment of several of them griping, pacing, and crying in Diary - that's the kind of thing we need much more of, all season long

Day 94 - Saturday 9/19

Pick a card

This cap looks highly symbolic of jury votes perhaps, hearts and all, but no - they were given a deck of cards, which made Vanessa very happy.. she did a "magic trick" for them, introducing it with: "showcase my ability to read people, I'm going to read your eyes" (much of her BB strategy as well).. sure enough, she got the right card, making Liz squeal

Vanessa taught Liz and Steve how to play gin and they played it together happily into the night while Vanessa took to her bed again/still.. she said she'll teach them Texas Hold'em tomorrow.. between the game and Vanessa's poker secret, the symbolism in their cards convos is thick, and unintentionally funny

After Dark did a cookies or s'mores viewer poll, and gifted them with makings for s'mores, which they made in the oven.. Liz thanked the viewers, like she has for the other kiddie poll gifts.. Steve pointed out at one point that when they do pics on finale night, it'll be the first time the entire cast will have been photographed together (because of the twins).. that's definitely unusual! Move-in pics are often in groups or missing late arrivals like Jeff and Jackie, but they're usually all there for the Day 2 bikini group shots

Late night, Steve wrote and rehearsed his F3 speech, which basically said how brilliantly Vanessa has driven the game, and that Johnny Mac told him "Vanessa is Derrick" and he's not going to make the $450,000 mistake Cody did.. I think it's probably too long a speech for that segment, and I wish he'd rewrite it to simply take the credit for taking out Vanessa.. it'll be good to butter her up for finals vote, but not to sound like she deserves the win in the jurors' minds so soon before they vote.. I also wish he'd leave the BB16 references in the past, but that's our Steve

How to pick a winner

It's time to haul out this old chestnut seasonal favorite and gentle reminder again.. please to enjoy

I've always maintained it doesn't matter a bit who gets the money unless you're a second cousin or better, but some Hamsterwatchers seem to care who wins, so I once again present the following for your rooting consideration.. after all, feedsters are more qualified to make a selection than bitter jurors - we don't see relevant Diary footage anymore since they don't air the meaty stuff, but we've seen far more than the jury, so they too need to use one of these methods:

Played the best game
This is the popular, politically correct method that everyone claims to use, but nobody really does.. Vanessa has a strong edge here but Steve won almost as many comps and Liz won quite a few as well.. socially, each of them had an obstacle to overcome: Vanessa's poker success secret, Steve's social awkwardness, and Liz having to play catch-up after switches with Julia.. but nearly every 'game' falls into one of the other categories, so don't feel pressured to root for anyone through some misguided urge to be PC

Lied the best/most
This one's a little squirrely as it crosses over into ethical/unethical territory, and that leads to arguments about politics and/or religion, and that leads to flame wars every time.. BB2/7 Dr. Will is the exception here: he won by skirting the moral issues and flat-out lied about everything except the fact that he was lying, and he was light years more fun & charming about it than most since.. Vanessa is a definite front-runner here, but her everlasting emphasis on her Integrity and her Word being good while lying her brains out, while clearly effective, is distasteful for many, including myself

Needs the money most
Please! We all 'need' a half million dollars! Anyone who goes on a tv show to pay their Visa bill or because they can't scrape together the next car payment should consider credit counseling, bankruptcy, gambling, or steady employment - we're all sick of the sob stories.. once again, there's a Vanessa exception here as she doesn't 'need' the money like an average person might, and she already did take up gambling

Cutest/sexiest/dreamiest
Generally a favorite method for feedsters, but more jury members are closet cutest-sexiest-dreamiest voters than they'll admit.. all three have their fans among viewers in this regard, believe it or not

Smartest player
A favorite for feedsters and jury alike, it's what most really mean when they say 'best game' - basically it means 'smarter than me' - but given the fact that we're dealing with people who've spent three months pooping on tv, being humiliated for our enjoyment, and making their friends & families ashamed to claim them, most hamsters are eliminated from this category when they complete their BB application

Played like I would
The mack daddy for feedsters who haven't caught on that everyone's different and everyone does different things for different reasons.. it's the most popular judging criteria and the dumbest: they aren't you, they haven't seen everything you've seen, and until you're in there for three months of paranoia, daily slander, and Diary messing up your better judgment, you can't possibly know what you'd do in there.. get over it

Backstabbing revenge
One of the elimination categories, this one's about rooting for anyone except the player who took out your favorite (or yourself, if on the jury).. this one usually decides the winner.. in gamespeak it's also known as 'nothing personal'

Creeped me out
Another elimination category and a big one some seasons, this is rooting for anyone except the player who gives you the willies or reminds you of your ex.. more popular among feedsters than the jury, which is odd: they're the ones who lived with the creepies - we can shut 'em off.. feel free to cite this one if you need an excuse to abstain from voting

I just like him or her
Hands-down easiest method because it requires no reasons or explanations, making it the best category to avoid involvement in flame wars.. however, you might be expected to back it up with something else in most BB chats or social media outlets

Deserves to win
This usually means you don't know or don't care and are probably just afraid of getting involved in a flame war.. back it up with something or shift over to 'I just like him or her'

Most entertaining
A personal favorite and while you might say this season it doesn't apply, the feeds have actually been more entertaining overall than many recent seasons.. our endgame trio brought us Vanessa's constant and largely undetected manipulation of most of them, plus her green hat and many tears.. Steve brought us scampering, social cues, and a good attitude even when being berated or made fun of.. Liz did the switching, sister banter and gossip, and of course showmancing.. yes, I realize all these things were often as annoying as they were entertaining, but I'm trying stay positive-ish

Played with integrity
This is a nice pipe dream for optimists and romantics, but not much more: in reality tv, the good tend to die young

I hate them all equally
Most feedsters end up here sooner or later

Ratings - Endgame edition

Ratings are based on entertainment value

The season retrospective show is usually a rerun yawn of over-scripted topics, and there was a lot of that, but they added some nice tidbits this time as well. Unfortunately, tidbits such as the truly unscripted angry and antsy Diary gems they shared just highlighted how desperately we're missing those throughout the season. I don't much care about game twists, lack of, or cancellation of, and despite the rumblings from The Powers That Be (and their boss) about the cast, I thought this season overall had the best feeds we've had for several years, and that is due to casting.

They can't predict how hamsters will act or interact, other than things like putting in a professional liar/bluffer and setting up Shelli and Clay, but we did have unpredictable behavior more often than not, and a lot of extra paranoia and just-for-fun shenanigans to boot. But the bottom line for me, and huge huge improvement this season, is the uptime. We used to get fishies for 10, 20, 30 minutes at a time on a fairly regularly basis and with no explanation - this season that just didn't happen, outside of the usual and expected comp and ceremony blocks. Otherwise feeds outages were few and far between, and very very short when they did happen.

Won: Ariana field trip; ½ week Wackstreet, Outback dinner
She seems to believe during these last days that she's a goner, out in third place and that's that, despite Vanessa telling her she'll take her to finals. I don't think Liz really believes that, so it's comical watching her just biding time to the end when we know both of them will take her and get her $50,000 (minimum). It's also comical watching her being as candid as ever, while Steve and Vanessa remain highly guarded in their ongoing cat and mouse game.

Won: nothing yet
WON PART 2
His speech rehearsals for F3 and F2 make me stabby. Instead of giving credit to Vanessa and everyone else, this is the time he should be claiming it for himself. And instead of making BB16 analogies, this is when he should be playing, talking, and claiming his own season. But his speech drafts just prove the man-child act is not an act all, and it's refreshing to see a non-glam, unsophisticated 'superfan' get this close to the end.. isn't that what we always ask for when they throw a bunch of recruits and actormodels at us?

Won: Ariana field trip (guest); Outback dinner; 24 hours polishing Jackie
WON PART 1
She was delighted when the cards arrived, and a lot of feedsters were hoping for some free poker masterclasses. Unfortunately, she had to start with the bare basics for Steve and Liz, and they preferred gin over poker anyway. I don't mind the slow final days of feeds a bit (it's a nice break) but even with the majority of her work behind her, she just doesn't seem to have any fun, whether she's playing cards or anything else. With the possible exception of poking at Steve, she does seem to like that.

Won: 3 week revival; 1 week Wackstreet
On a show that often has cookie-cutter personalities, he's truly unique. Between his random shouty interviews, dentistry, and superb guitar & bass playing, I had no idea what to expect, and I was pleasantly surprised. I loved his dry humor and his exuberant Diaries, and he did well saving himself as long as he did because he was most everyone's easy target most weeks, mostly because they didn't know what to make of him. He kept his BB knowledge secret and slept too much when he should have been out gaming, but he was a pleasure to watch when he was awake. I think we'll never again see someone sit down to vote and greet Julie with 'What do you want?!' Classic.

Won: Outback dinner (guest)
He came in educated & articulate, with BB savvy, and training & experience roleplaying bad guys. That was all aces on paper, but he disappointed with weird moves like aligning with Jace, and then he fell hard for Liz after saying he knew showmances take hamsters' heads out of the game. He blew up his game when Operation Jason backfired spectacularly, but he salvaged certain game death by pleading with Vanessa and it worked, and I realized his social game was in far better shape than it appeared. His Judas character failed repeatedly and he alienated most viewers on a daily basis, but I don't think he deserved as bad as he got. But the beardytail has to go.

Won: ½ week Wackstreet
She did the twin switching pretty well, considering they aren't as identical as their DNA. Some called them mean girls but I loved the candid banter between them, as well as Julia's funny interactions with Steve and James in particular. I couldn't get enough of her 'shrrrrt' and 'for surrrre' gags, despite how silly and repetitive they were. Julia's facial expressions were priceless, especially her frequent shockface, and she was the best target for James to scare since she never failed to scream and she usually fell over. She wasn't crazy about her sister's showmance, and while Liz might face a firestorm when she gets out, Julia should be just fine.

Won: Outback dinner
He had the first overlong HOH and his easy personality plus everyone gaming their brains out set him up in a friendly spot with everyone. He was hated by many when he buddied up with Jeff, but James kept it humorous even then. After that, James amped up his pranks, scaring, and candy pelting. He hung out with the less lucky Goblins and they were usually fun to watch, but they spent too much time having fun while the others gamed around them. He'll be remembered for his tinfoil headphones and Swiffer, his quick and unique wit, many Jamesisms and Lines of the Day, making Liz's kitty hat his own, and his devotion to his little girl Baleigh.

Won: Gronk party cruise
She's one of the best laugh-at-herselfers we've ever had, and while she got emotional losing comps and losing her friends, she was mostly upbeat the rest of the time. She was a very good sport about James and Jeff's sexual jokes, as well as with the rest of them poking about her inability to win comps. But she won a cruise in a season without many prizes (thus far), and I think it's safe to say she'll remain friends with all or most of them. She turned laying around into an art form, inspiring me to start a #LeaningMeg hashtag game that became entirely too easy, and her enthusiasm for their non-game games made them fun, as did her cereal scorekeeping system.

Won: $10,000; Never Not pass; Outback dinner (guest)
She came in with that incredible train/tram story and a good attitude about it, and she called herself 'Basic Becky' which fit well when she talked about recipes, dogs, and her daily tasks and procedures at work. But she proved to be a comp beast and she lived up to her billing as Black Friday Boss when she openly targeted Vanessa. Unfortunately for her, everyone turned tail on that plan and Becky was demoted to the after-Christmas returns desk. She should have gone on a dating show but she gave us some fun with Becky Updates - even Olive Garden got in on that. She can laugh at herself and those ones are always appreciated.

Won: 1 week 6 days knight; 24 hours polishing by Vanessa
She came in as a stuntcast cross-promo opp with Jeff and she was easily the better of that duo, even if she was barely seen for weeks. She had a better grasp of this show and game than he did, and she talked some big talk but didn't get a chance for us to see if she'd put it in action or not. She did her costume week with a good attitude, and she was a good-natured participant in most of their non-game activities. She gave us some behind-the-scenes 'Amazing Race' info which was fun and different. Like Victoria last year, she doesn't need all that fake hair but at least hers stayed in pretty good shape most of the time.

Won: 2,400 battles
She's the type who had Star of the Season potential but she didn't quite make the cut. She was volatile, emotional, controlling, and prone to hissy fits, and she took most things personally. But she was also an unexpected comp beast, especially on the endurance wall, and she wasn't afraid to make 'big moves' even if Vanessa had a heavy hand in most of them. She did her 2,400 battles largely (and surprisingly) without complaint, and she gained some hard-earned respect with that. Her thing with Clay was odd and uncomfortable to watch, and she easily won Death Race 2015 with her curious and unflattering taped-in extensions.

Won: Ireland trip; Outback dinner (guest)
He started badly, calling himself a 'superfan' after being recruited at a basketball game and marathoning a few seasons. He said BB is about making new friends and memories, and he had a problem with lies and backstabs except when he was doing it. He spent most of his time stapled to Shelli and they got a lot of mother/son jokes, but I saw them more as creepy Lannisters, especially when she went on about how like her brother he is. He provided loads of unintentional comedy, weird mouth things and mumbling translations, he peed in HOH shower, and he got out just in time.

Won: 1 week Wackstreet
Another superfan who found out it's easier to play BB from home, he fell into Vanessa's disastrous Renom Roulette wheel and went out earlier than many hoped. He got mouthy about many of them and popped some good funnies, but he laid around most of the time until it was too late. He gave us some of the best reaction faces of all time, especially the night they played squicky truth or dare - he even had a dedicated cam for much of it. He mentioned this site often, usually saying it's 'hard to navigate' so he'll probably never see this.

Won: Nothing
She was erratic and unpredictable, and the random ways she kept them stirred up made for some of the best feeds in ages. And as a bonus, she featured in all the fights, many because the others didn't believe her telling truths. They did buy most of the fibs, and without 'empirical evidence,' but they fell for her wacky gameplay more than twice. She marooned herself in a bed and a dental chair, with some laughs in between, and she got the 2nd ever penalty vote. I enjoyed watching her, and will miss her.

Won: Nothing
I haven't given many empty wheels before their time, and I don't think any of those got them as early as he did. But we've never had such a misogynistic, inappropriate, and unfunny pig before. CBS let him get away clean and that's what it is - I'm just glad to see the back of him.

Won: Power to nullify 3 votes
She wasn't afraid to confront people nor to keep fighting to stay, which was good for us, but didn't help her much. She figured out the twins early but didn't leverage that to her advantage soon or well enough. Her 'game on' fight with Audrey and pantry rant to us were memorable, especially her catch-phrase 'get your life!' She was smart, funny, and volatile. She didn't let us take full advantage of #DaVonneHasADaughter, a hashtag that was too good to be true.

Won: Nothing
He was like a parody of all the former surf boys we've had, with all the worst qualities of asshat hamsters past rolled into one. He verbally beat up on Steve a few times but the primetime version earned him viewer loathing, even if his actoring was lousy. He ranted, streaked, flipped us off, and mostly talked about himself, but he promised to save us all someday through music.

They erroneously said last year that BB16 would have 'the most houseguests ever' but this year they really did, with 17 total after the twins split into separate entities. Now my symmetry for this section is out of whack and I don't know what to put here.

Big Brother 17 FAQ
June 18 was Day 1 move-in. June 24 was CBS premiere, Day 7. Finale will be September 23, Day 98

Feeds are streamed by CBS, and accessible via All Access subscription. Call 888-274-5343 for account help, including cancellation.

CBS shows are Sundays 8pm, Wednesdays 8pm, eviction Thursdays 9pm (Global in Canada).

Big Brother After Dark is on POP (formerly TVGN). It airs Monday, Tuesday 11pm-2am; Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday midnight-2am; Thursday 1am-3am. The aired blocks are recorded earlier on the same night.

The CBS app (by CBS Interactive) will play BB air shows and other CBS shows, but not feeds. Use your browser to watch feeds on mobile devices. The same All Access link used to subscribe will lead to the feeds viewing page if you're already signed up.

Liz and Julia had to survive five evictions in order to play separately as individuals, which they did, with Julia officially entering the game on Day 43. They switched places every few days. They had a limited time in Diary to change clothes, adjust their appearance, and exchange info. The non-playing twin was sequestered in a 'house,' possibly the jury house.

BB17 prizes are the same: $500k for the winner and $50k for 2nd place. Stipend for the others is $1,000 per week again, including pre-show hotel and jury sequester. Recruits or those with established pre-season fan bases might get more.

The habitat has 80 HD cameras (up four) and over 100 microphones.

The recorded in-house announcements are the voice of producer Don Wollman.
