Day 45 - Friday - August 20, 2021

SarahB nominated Derek F and Claire. It was a repeat of last week's original noms, except the order was reversed. Despite SarahB saying she'd run her own HOH, and get some sleep rather than talking all night, Kyland talked at her to push his agenda and these nom choices until after 4am (with Derek X as his actual target). This morning, Claire told SarahB that she'd be okay with going up as a pawn. Derek X met with SarahB after nominations, surely replaying in his head the convo the other day about probably being a backdoor target if not an original nom. SarahB told him Claire's odds of coming off the block were good, between High Rollers roulette and veto. Later Derek X asked Kyland what he and SarahB talked about all night, as she'd originally said she hoped he'd play roulette but now she didn't, and "something changed." Naturally Kyland didn't acknowledge that he was the reason things changed. Derek F met with Xavier, and he was sounding defeated and irritated about being the new designated pawn. Xavier told him he's got a strong alliance supporting him.

Feeds went to anipals a little before 1pm for their High Rollers room and Chopping Block Roulette, which reminds me to remind you that the adoptables featured during comp and ceremony blocks are once again brought to us courtesy of Rancho Coastal Humane Society. Visit them if you're in SoCal - or your local shelter if you're not - to find your new best friend.

Feeds came back at 5.49pm. Alyssa won the High Roller game, removed Derek F from the block, and spun the roulette wheel to determine his replacement. That turned out to be Xavier. Much scrambling and whispering ensued. SarahB told Xavier she was "kind of hoping there might could be a backdoor this week" meaning Derek X. She asked Xavier not to share that but said she'd already shared with Kyland. SarahB then told us if Derek X doesn't play and win veto, she thought he'd "definitely" be evicted against Claire. Meanwhile Derek X told Tiffany that Claire should be safe against Xavier (no) and he probably wouldn't use veto if he wins it.

There was some she said/she said confusion (or lying) about whether Alyssa acted on her own in removing Derek F or if she did that at SarahB's request. It was the latter, but Alyssa told SarahB that "Claire gave the vibe that it was all my decision." SarahB said that isn't what she'd told Claire. Later Alyssa told Xavier that Derek X didn't congratulate her win or commiserate about inadvertently putting her teamie on the block, and she said he'd asked if SarahB told her to save Derek F. Alyssa told that with attitude, implying DX had asked with attitude, and she said "Dafuq?!" about the question even being asked.

Hannah also played for today's High Roller, and came close to winning - or did she? Later she said she'd lied about that. She started some preliminary work for Claire to go over Derek X in case he does go on the block after veto. And Hannah told us she wants to get picked for veto and win so she can prevent Derek X from going up at all. She also told us "I really hope America understands the purpose and the mission of the Cookout, and why we're so adamant on doing what we feel like we need to do, even if that comes at the expense of people like DX, Claire, Sarah Beth, and Alyssa. I want to be clear that those people don't deserve to be here any less than the Cookout does" and she said it breaks her heart that all four are playing their hearts out but there's no chance they'll win if everything goes according to plan, and she said that's really upsetting to her. (See my Producers rating below: I really don't think the edits have been conveying Cookout's mission to viewers properly, and they should.)

I'm not sure if anyone else played today or not, nor what all the BB Bucks amounts were this week. Hannah and Xavier figured totals were 100 for Claire, Derek F, Derek X; 75 for Alyssa, Hannah, Xavier; and 50 for Azah, Kyland, SarahB, Tiffany. Hannah told us she got 75, and we know Alyssa got 75 because she had 50 and today's Roulette cost 125. The rest will be verified on Sunday's show and I'll update the various pertinent places here on the site then.

Day 44 - Thursday - August 19, 2021

In the overnight report, vote discussions revved up again, between SarahB and Kyland, and Hannah/Derek X. Kyland got worked up about something and met with Hannah and DX where he finally failed to formulate words, leaving long gaping pauses in his phrases. Derek F revved up campaigning by asking Tiffany for a clear-the-air talk which they started in the bathroom but moved to the pantry due to heavy traffic. They rehashed last week's fights about the Christian vote and Tiffany made it clear she wasn't much interested in hearing it, as he hadn't apologized or even come to her about it before now. He said he was sorry but that's often not good enough when asked for, and she told him as much. Eventually he apologized again and she accepted it. In a normal bickery season this one probably wouldn't even qualify as a fight for the tally but it did get a bit heated and she did raise her voice to say she was "FUMING" and "LIVID" so I tallied it. Today Derek F retold to Xavier saying Tiffany was "screaming" (no).

The kicker was Britini, Claire, Derek X, Hannah eavesdropping for some of it. Both Tiffany and Derek F said various times they were "loyal to this" despite their personal differences, meaning Cookout, but I don't think either of them said anything specific about that. They didn't linger outside the door for long, and Derek X said "mom and dad are fighting."

Once again the show began with the wrong nominee in the chair, until they ran the veto meeting and Britini replaced Claire next to Derek F. Julie asked if she could call Derek F Big D, yes, and then asked or said she'll call Britini Brititi. What? "Brititi" did another rap, and was evicted 7-1, with Azah the one, as expected. Britini looked like she'd been given a heads up, and she went out with smiles and hugs.

The remainders inside did their own hugs as she left, like they do, and I think this Kyland and Derek F moment began as one of those awkward hugs when your faces end up aimed for a kiss. Kyland took advantage of it and planted a big one on Derek F. Out here many were stunned, many were delighted, and many are still clutching their pearls.

The HOH comp was Dash to Dinner: one at a time they walked a series of balance beams across the yard, with a 45-second time limit. They had to select a path and some beams were wider than others. Those who hadn't yet played waited behind a wall so they couldn't see which paths people used. Claire went first and did it in 34.97 seconds. Alyssa and Derek F crapped/timed out, then SarahB did hers in 21.03 seconds. Azah, Hannah, Tiffany, Derek X, Xavier couldn't beat her time, and SarahB became the first female HOH of the season. The new BB Bucks vote opened with the same setup as last week.

Feeds came back to Azah being upset about losing Britini, Derek F griping about all the comps "for you skinny bitches," and SarahB celebrating in the pantry with Kyland, and asking him what to do. Tiffany asked Azah "how do we get out of this pickle?" and they proceeded to play out scenarios, most of which included losing Derek X. Tiffany told Azah she'd spent her BB Bucks last week and lost them - I don't know if Azah knew that before, and Tiffany kicked herself because tonight's was "her comp to lose." Kyland later told Tiffany that SarahB was thinking Claire and Derek X noms, or Alyssa and Xavier, but was leaning towards Claire and Derek X. Kyland said his ideal scenario would be for SarahB to put up Claire and himself, because of the veto comp and the High Rollers roulette this week. He and Tiffany agreed the main thing was to ensure no Cookouts would be on the block next Thursday. Kyland present that idea to SarahB, who didn't sound convinced it was a good idea to put up her cuddle boo. She also didn't seem thrilled at Kyland giving her How to HOH lesson.

SarahB began her one-on-meetings around 8.40pm, in Have-not room, even though she'd earlier said she thought one-on-ones were dumb. She told virtually all of them she wanted this week's Roulette power used, and asked several if they'd be willing to play it if not on the block, if they could afford it. She also said she expected at least one of her nominees to come off, and that she wants to give heads ups to those who will go up. She was suspicious of Alyssa, telling several afterward that she seemed like she was lying. She was enthusiastic about Jackpot alliance to her co-members of that, Claire and Tiffany. She told Tiffany she wouldn't want to sit next to Kyland at the end, and she complained about his lengthy meetings and lengthy hugs to Claire. She told Azah she'd actively campaigned against Britini, and Azah burst out laughing. Later Azah said she often does that hearing uncomfortable news and that she was expecting SarahB to say something else. Derek F lied about his BB Bucks and about being a volunteer pawn, and Xavier and Alyssa lied about various things. Afterwards SarahB reported to Kyland, who'd already talked at her before her meetings. I don't recall him reporting to her when he was HOH.

SarahB got her room a little after midnight and they all traipsed upstairs to ooh and ahh at the pics of her family, cat, and girlfriend Shelly. She also got socks, a hoodie, nail polish, new sunglasses(!), earrings, a BB23 bracelet, cosmetics, tons of snacks, frozen pizza, ice cream, Snapple, sandwiches, salads, wine, and music by Rihanna. She read her letter which was from Shelly, which was written before her birthday (August 9), and mentioned "the other contestants get to hug and cuddle with you and I don't get to." So now they know Shelly is real.

Ratings - TBA edition

Ratings to follow sooner or later, based on entertainment value

Noms count: original/renom / HR: High Roller result

I am often confused by the way they spin the feeds stories into show edits, but Wednesday's OTEV show had a few glaring omissions that made no sense at all. One, they neglected to mention or even hint that the target had shifted from Claire to Britini because it was guessed (correctly) that Britini had gotten 100 BB Bucks, and she banked them, while Claire earned 50 and spent them. And two, they made it appear that The Deal between Britini and Kyland was an actual, legit deal when it was not. I have no doubt Britini believed it was legit (thanks to Kyland's convoluted word salads), so her shock and outrage at going on the block were perfectly understandable. However, again, Kyland never agreed on the safety deal she pitched to him, even though the Wednesday show implied he had.

Three, why haven't they stressed Cookout's underlying mission of finally having Black finalists in civilian BB USA? Da'Vonne stated it so eloquently last year, but this season it's coming across to casuals as 'just another big alliance' steamrolling their way to the end. (I'm not acknowledging the racist 'fans' complaints, but they sure do have a lot.) Every Cookout member has said at various times on feeds just how much the bigger picture means. Unless I missed it, that part seems to have been overlooked in the edits, along with their individual challenges within the game because they are putting that goal first. Maybe these things will be cleared up on Thursday's show.

Update: None of these things were cleared up on Thursday's show.

1st juror - 6th evicted - Day 44

Obit to follow

Won: Week 1 Wildcard + safety; Week 3 safety
HOH 1 - Veto 2 - Noms 0/1 - HN 2
TEAM KINGS Captain

5th evicted - Day 37

It was tricky to tell him apart from Travis at first, which wasn't helped by Christian changing his hair once or twice a day, and he often sounded like Victor Arroyo when he spoke. But that passed and soon it was easy to tell Christian was the loud one who was super-glued to Alyssa most of the time. He was sometimes fun and seems like a good guy, but he made no secret of his physical abilities, including doing six backflip/burpie combos in a row one day, just because he could. Those abilities were largely what got him the boot, since he also proved he could put them into action, even when he didn't need to.

Won: Nothing
HOH 0 - Veto 0 - Noms 1/0 - HN 1
TEAM ACES Captain

4th evicted - Day 30

Apparently she spent a few hours on Twitter and she selected one of my tweets to complain about being villainized, slut shamed, and hated. My tweet was factual, with a touch of snark, but none of that stuff. Maybe she forgot what she signed up for, and I'm sure she's having a tough re-entry, but after having hate for her flung into my mentions every day (as all updaters get, for each of them) to then get called out publicly for what I didn't do, I'll just go with Mariah's 'I don't know her.'

Won: Nothing
HOH 0 - Veto 0 - Noms 1/0 - HN 1
TEAM ACES

3rd evicted - Day 23

At cast reveal I thought international flight attendant would mean great people skills, but no. He came in boasting of charm but it didn't last long. His talk about girls and dating, and his behavior towards several women in there, were problematic and bound to get worse if he'd stayed. He was happy to be Frenchie's lieutenant for the chaotic first week but then Brent turned on him and practically denied ever being with him. He had zero self-awareness about all this and the edits skewered him as they did Frenchie, proving once again if you do clownery, you'll get the clown music.

Won: Nothing
HOH 1 - Veto 0 - Noms 1/0 - HN 0
TEAM JOKERS Captain

2nd evicted - Day 16

Cast reveal brought controversy plus a major Cody/Derrick mixup, and the feeds opened to him announcing he wouldn't put up a woman or minority, but then he put up Alyssa and Kyland, and it was downhill from there. He did everything a feedster should know not to do: shouting in Diary, talking in cliches, Bomb Squadding, pandering, power-tripping, mistaking BB history items, grandstanding, begging for a viewer save, and threatening to quit. Still, all that gave us a wild ride and super-chaotic first week of feeds that we'd never be able to piece together if we hadn't seen it unfold.

Won: Nothing
HOH 0 - Veto 0 - Noms 0/1 - HN 0
TEAM QUEENS

1st evicted - Day 9

I barely know who he was. He dressed in drag (and looked okay doing so), he gave Kyland a birthday lap dance, took his shirt off for his nominee speech, and complained to Julie that white guys with abs are targets. And he didn't do much to prevent his eviction. That's all I got. Aloha.

Won: Early ticket home
HOH 0 - Veto 0 - Noms 0/0 - HN 0

Replaced pre-season

Replaced by Claire pre-season, she tested positive for COVID.

Won: Early ticket home
HOH 0 - Veto 0 - Noms 0/0 - HN 0

Replaced pre-season

Replaced by Christian pre-season, we may never know why.
